Motocross Riders and their Physical Fitness Needs
Posted on: August 23, 2011
There is no doubt that motocross racing is a physically demanding sport. Strength conditioning and cardio conditioning are important to a rider who expects to compete at a professional level. A rider's arms and legs take a beating acting as additional suspension for the core of his body. Physical size of the body plays a role in fatigue as well. The less you weigh the easier it is for your muscles to resist fatigue. Relaxing while riding hard will also prevent your muscles from over-exerting themselves thus preventing early fatigue.
Strength conditioning for muscles is important for any serious motocross rider. A rider's workout should focus on endurance. A rider's idea body shape is the same as that of a fighter or soccer player. Motocross riders, fighters, and soccer players need lean muscle for strength without weighing the body down. Large bulky muscles are heavy and take more energy to use. The bulkier the muscles the harder the heart has to work to keep those muscles going. Strength training is to be focused on lighter weight with high repetition count. Strength training while wearing a weight vest will also help a rider. A 30 to 50 pound weight vest will help your body have more explosive strength while riding when the vest is gone.
In addition to strength training, keeping a healthy diet is important to a rider. The less you weigh the easier it will be to complete a moto. A male rider at 190 pounds will fatigue sooner than a 150 pound rider. Your arms will have less weight to keep attached to the bike, and your legs will experience less impact when landing. Serious riders need to keep a healthy weight.
Muscle fatigue can set in on a rider's forearms very quickly. Pay close attention during a motocross practice day and you will see plenty of riders off course shaking out their hands trying to loosen up tightened forearm muscles. Some riders put a "death grip" onto the handle bars that increases forearm fatigue. Using off road gloves with less padding in the palm and a grip enhanced palm can increase the feel a rider has with the handle bars. This type of glove will help a rider find the correct pressure he has to apply to have a firm grip without a fatigue-prone death grip.
A healthy rider who is in great physical condition who can relax throughout a moto will be faster on the stopwatch without a doubt. Motorsports is a strategy game. Riders who spend time off the track preparing their bodies for competition will always beat the "show up and ride" racers on any given day. A physically prepared and focused racer will beat his competition before the first gate drops.
